President's Message

October 2011 IIA Miami Chapter President’s Message

Dear IIA Miami Chapter Members and Friends:

As we turn the page from Summer to Fall, I wanted to provide you with an update of all the activities that our Chapter is offering to the South Florida IIA Community.  Through the tremendous leadership and energy of many volunteers (past and present), the Miami IIA Chapter continues offer valuable CPE programs, networking events, and scholarship opportunities – recently earning us status as a “Gold Chapter” with the IIA.

CAE Roundtable – In late August, the Chapter coordinated a roundtable event for nearly 25 of South Florida’s leading Chief Audit Executives.  Many thanks to Tom Burke and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines for sponsoring and hosting this event.  The group discussed many topics, including planning, talent and tools.  Many departments are clearly focused on delivering value through their Internal Audit activities, which includes developing the skills needed to accomplish this objective.  We are incorporating input from our CAE’s into the Chapter’s programming, and hope you will take advantage of our local CPE opportunities.  Our next CAE roundtable is being schedule for this Spring.

Friday October 28th CPE Event – Our Chapter has secured a highly regarded national speaker to provide us with training in a very important and interesting area.  Dr. Joan Pastor frequently provides training to internal auditors at leading companies, and at national IIA conferences.  We are extremely excited to have her coming to South Florida, and we hope you will join us to hear her speak on “Communication, Conflict Management and Negotiation Skills for Internal Auditors”.  This is extremely valuable training, and I recommend coordinating a group from your department to attend (discounted rates are available for groups of 4 or more).   For more information on this event and to add it to your Outlook calendar, please click here: http://www.cvent.com/events/communication-conflict-management-and-negotiation-skills-for-internal-auditors/event-summary-0f08945b2874497899e3da33d09d2531.aspx?i=fb3bc9da-06f9-4006-a93d-1beaed37718a#.

Exciting Holiday Party!! – I’m thrilled to announce that our Chapter has booked our annual holiday party at an exciting new venue!  We are hosting the annual holiday party at the Sky Lounge at Bongo’s in the Hard Rock Casino entertainment complex on Friday December 2nd.  A registration link will be sent out shortly, and we encourage you to register right away to secure a spot for you and your guest.  Our Chapter will be presenting 3 students with $1,000 scholarships at this event, as well as recognizing outstanding contributions to our Chapter.  It is sure to be a great time, so don’t miss out!!

2012 Events – Planning is underway for the events our Chapter will host in the first half of 2012.  These include:
•    Excellence in Internal Auditing Conference – Friday January 27th at FIU Koven’s Center (mark your calendar now)
•    Fraud Conference – Our joint event with the ACFE is being planned for March 2012
•    Technology Risk and Auditing Conference – Planned for May 2012.

Call for Speakers & Volunteer – Please contribute to our profession and build your presentation and leadership skills by volunteering to present at one of our 2012 events.  Our membership is always interested in learning about how leading internal auditors are applying best practices to add value, strengthen risk management and improve internal control.  Please email me at pres@iiamiami.org if you are interested in speaking.  Volunteering is another way to get involved and help shape our Chapter’s programs.

Communication & Academic Relations – We have updated the Miami IIA webpage, and are striving to keep it updated with information and resources ( http://www.iiamiami.org/ ).   Further, we are currently exploring opportunities to improve communication through the use of a LinkedIn Group for our Chapter.  Additionally, our Academic Relations committee has been advocating on behalf of our Chapter at local Universities, to help create awareness of our profession as an outstanding career option.

Keep in mind that all IIA members are automatically members of our local Chapter (there is no additional fee associated with membership in the local Chapter).  I encourage you to forward this note to internal auditors in South Florida that that may not be receiving our communications (please contact me to be added to our distribution list).  Non-IIA members are encouraged to join the IIA to take advantage of the membership benefits, but are also welcome to attend our local Chapter CPE events (at a slightly higher non-member price).  For more information on becoming a member of the IIA, please visit http://www.theiia.org/membership/.

Thanks very much for your membership, and MANY THANKS to our volunteers, speakers and sponsors who are so vital to the success of our Chapter!
